No Small Thing

cover of No Small ThingSometimes, something as small as an ad in the daily newspaper can change your whole life.

When twelve-year-old Nathaniel and his two sisters, Cid and Queenie, discover an ad for a free pony in the paper, they can hardly believe their luck. The pony is theirs, as long as they can afford to take care of it. But what will their mother say?

Nat knows things are hard for his mom; his dad walked out on them four years ago and his mom has been struggling to work and raise three children. But having a pony would help Nat and Cid stop bickering and it would mean so much to Queenie. Although initially unwilling, Nat’s mother eventually lets them keep the pony.

And so begins a year of self-discovery for Nat, who is trying to deal with his father’s absence and to look out for his younger sister, who is “different.” He’s also trying to sort out his emotions for the rich, pretty girl in his class. And while life may not always be easy, Nat knows that his very own pony is waiting for him at the end of every day. Until a fire destroys the barn…

Poignant yet often humorous, No Small Thing is inspired by events in the author’s life. It is not just a horse story, but a story about the search for love and identity in the face of longing, abandonment and uncertainty.

I love this book to bits Natale! In the third grade I won a poster making contest at my elementary school and got to pick any book to have for free. I choose your book and I am so glad I did. I have read it probably twice a year since then, and I just started tenth grade. I finally thought of the idea of looking at some of your other work, and that brought me here. I’m looking forward to reading them, and thank-you so much for writing this wonderful book!!

  • natale says:

Hey, Kayla, that’s nice to hear.

No Small Thing is based on a true story. Some changes were made but many of the details are true. When my sisters and I were young we got a pony for free and rode it home. Our mom was not happy and wanted us to return him so we ran away until she agreed to let us keep him. Different days!

Of course Nat is really me though I changed my character to a boy because I thought it would be cool to have a male protagonist.

Hope that helps and good luck with your project!

    Natale

  • natale says:

    Hi Gabrielle,

Thanks for the great email. I’m so happy you liked No Small Thing. 🙂

The sequel is called All The Way Home. You can order it through Chapters.ca or Amazon.ca, etc.

To answer your question, yes, most of the story is based on real events. There were a few things added here and there, but most of it is true.

I hope you enjoy the sequel!!

Hi, I read this book back when I was I don’t know probably 2nd or 3rd grade and I was obsessed. I just now re-read it and have the same feelings. I really love it. I agree, it would make a very interesting movie and I would enjoy seeing it. I just found out you have a sequel and I ordered it right away! Love it. keep it up(:

  • natale says:

    Hi Grace!

I am writing a new book. It’s for teens. I don’t know when it will be out but I will definitely post it here when it is!

  • Grace says:

    Hi Natale,
i just wanted to know if you where writing any new books at the time!! if so i want to be the first to raed it!!

  • natale says:

    Hi Molly!

There is a sequel to No Small Thing called All The Way Home. And I have another book you might enjoy called Piper. You can find these books at the public library or order them from Chapters.ca.

To answer your other question, I didn’t have writer’s block with this book because it’s based on a true story and I’d been thinking about it for years before I wrote it. But I think that writers need lots of time to write books and some need more than others so my advice is to give yourself the time you need and the story will present itself when it’s ready. 🙂

  • natale says:

    Thanks so much, Megan! 🙂

  • Megan says:

Hello Natale I love your books! I am 11 and i want to be a writer just like YOU!

    Molly
P.S. I have only read that book, are any of your other books good for a 11 year old girl? Thanks so much. And also did you ever have writer’s block when you are writing this book? I just went thru a case of it!! 🙂 But my teacher helped me!!! And also, if you have heard of a book that is good, please tell me because I need a book to read, maybe one of yours!!

  • natale says:

Thanks, Molly! I’m so happy you love No Small Thing!!

It’s based loosely on a true story. When I was young, my two sisters and I answered an ad for a free pony. That pony was Smokey! We got into all kinds of trouble and heartbreak over him. He was a great pony! 🙂
